Will Stainless Steel Kitchen Appliances Suit My Kitchen?

Stainless steel is convenient and easy to clean, but you may be afraid that in choosing stainless steel, you will lose the character of your kitchen. It does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel. Stainless basically means that it 'stains less' not that it is stain proof, so do not think that no matter what falls on it, it will not stain. This is not the case. But it is far more resistant than many other materials used in domestic appliances.

There are different grades and surface finishes of this material to suit the environment to which the material will be subjected in its lifetime. Common uses other than in kitchen appliances are in cutlery and watch straps. Stainless steel is also less prone to corrosion and rust than many other types of finish. This is because it has a sufficient amount of chromium present so that a passive film of chromium oxide forms, which prevents further corrosion.

Stainless steel's resistance to corrosion and staining, its low maintenance and relative cost effectiveness make it an ideal base material for a host of commercial applications and domestic appliances. Added to the fact that it is 100% recyclable, the advantages of over black or white models do seem to be pretty high in number. In fact, an average appliance in the form is composed of around 60% recycled material, 25% originating from end-of-life products and around 35% coming from manufacturing processes.

Another of the main benefits as regards style of a stainless steel kitchen is that it is easy to find kitchen appliances that match each other so co-ordinating a kitchen is made far easier. A stainless steel themed kitchen also has a modern feel to it and because it is easier to clean than a lot of other finishes and does not corrode easily it looks smarter and newer for longer.

Most manufacturers provide kitchen appliances in this finish including AEG, Electrolux, Zanussi, Neff, Hotpoint, Bosch, Tecnik, Maytag, Smeg and others. They usually offer a range of styles and a choice of matching appliances so that your kitchen is coordinated.

A problem with stainless steel is that it is not to everybody's taste. It can look cold, sterilised and impersonal, which is fine in a professional or ultra modern kitchen, but for a traditional kitchen, is not the feel that you are usually going for. But a lot of the time, the mood of your kitchen is defined more by how you mix the types of cupboards and the colours of other features in your kitchen with these kitchen appliances.

Stainless steel will look more attractive if your cupboards are made up of warm colours and dark woods. For a modern looking kitchen, light wood looks great with light fresh colours with stainless steel appliances. But of course, if you have your heart set on glossy cupboards and high shine ultra modern doors, the steel will begin to make the kitchen look impersonal, so choose carefully to achieve the look that you are really after in your home.

The Beginner's Guide to Buying Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are used to store everything from food to kitchenware. Just how much you can store in your kitchen, however, depends on the size and number of cabinets you have. Whether you are building, renovating or remodelling your kitchen, here are some things you should know before deciding on which kind of cabinet is right for you. First, consider the size and layout of your kitchen. Certain kitchen designs allow for more cabinet space while some require more creative cabinet layouts. The location of your appliances can also affect the layout of your cabinets.

When buying or having a cabinet made, one of the main things to consider is the material to be used. Kitchen cabinets made of solid wood cost more than those made of plywood although solid wood, such as oak or walnut, is typically used more for cabinet doors than for the cabinet itself. And though they are costlier than cabinets made from other materials, plywood and solid wood cabinets last longer.

You should also look at the doorknobs and hinges used on the cabinets. While their style may not necessarily compliment the kitchen's design, make sure that they are of good quality and will last for a long time.

You have the option of having your new kitchen cabinets bought off-the-shelf or custom-made. The latter kind costs more but for those who don't mind the extra expense, these cabinets not only allow you to have more style options, they will also be a better fit for your kitchen. In terms of quality, some of the cheaper, ready-to-assemble cabinet units are actually as sturdy as the more expensive kinds.

The downside of these units, however, is the fact that there aren't as many choices in terms of design, style and size. Setting up the cabinets also takes time. Semi-custom made-to-order pieces do exist and offer more choices than the stock cabinets at a price that is usually much less than the custom-made ones. If you choose a semi-custom cabinet, check the quality and the features first before making a purchase. If you are remodelling, make sure that the style of your new kitchen cabinets matches the rest of your kitchen.

Cabinet designs are evolving fast with the emphasis on consumer convenience. Some cabinet designs have pullout shelves that reduce the need to bend down when searching through lower cabinets. Others have built-in pullout drawers and containers for food or kitchen utensils.

How to Refinish Kitchen Cabinets

Times are hard and with the current financial climate you are going to have to wait for that new kitchen you've promised yourself. If the thought of looking at those tired units which even when they were new are a style that you never thought was attractive, then take heart there is a way you can get a whole new kitchen without the massive outlay that a complete new kitchen would entail. Read on for ideas on how to refinish kitchens cabinets that can result in a whole new and updated look for the most used room in the house.

It's not important if you have no idea on how to refinish kitchen cabinets or if you're DIY skills are minimal. You can do much of the work yourself and that cuts the cost down even more. The most difficult task involved in the removal of cabinet drawer and the changes you make to them will be guided by what skills you have or feel you can attempt. To begin with look round at your existing kitchen and then compare it with your ideal kitchen after all it would be no good going strait for refinished cabinets if the result could be enhanced by a little bit of forethought. For example are there any uncomplicated items that you could move. The fridge perhaps or anything free standing that could be re-sited or moved out altogether? When you're sure you can make no other easy improvements consider colours and styles. What's the light situation in your kitchen is it bright and open or cramped and dark? Obviously the former could take a dark unit without too much loss of light whereas the latter could do with a lighter wood or finish to help with the gloom. Go through magazines and catalogues and look on the web for ideas of the styles you like. Perhaps you like the modern high gloss bright deep reds and blacks or maybe you would like a shaker style or sparkling white finish.

How to refinish kitchen cabinets starts with the removal of all cabinet doors. A simple rub down and gloss repaint job is the quickest simplest and cheapest change you can make. However if you want to make greater changes easily you can use one of the modern creative textured paint finishes which can really give a great new look. For further changes you could create new looking doors with new mouldings or apply new wood veneers and finally you could go the whole way and hang completely new doors. Finish off with new handles a new complimentary work surface and hey presto a new looking kitchen. The bonus points are the pride in having done it yourself and the mileage you can get out of telling all your friends how you refurbished your kitchen cabinets.

Contemporary Kitchen Tables - Perfect For Adding to Your Kitchen Space

If you have been looking at contemporary kitchen tables, it may be because you would like your kitchen to make a statement. At the same time as being a great place to cook, to look after household affairs and to check you have everything you need for the coming week, kitchens are more and more becoming gathering points for friends and family. The natural place for this to happen is round the kitchen table.

With this in mind, you may feel that the classical kitchen table that is rectangular, stands on four separate legs and looks like it comes straight out of a Victorian farmhouse is not the way that you want to set the scene in your kitchen. The good news is that many contemporary kitchen tables are now available and can transform your kitchen from an entirely utilitarian domain to a room where you can serve meals and welcome guests without blushing.

Contemporary kitchen tables use a variety of materials, and not just wood. Metal is a choice which allows designers to create a host of new designs as metal can be fashioned and wrought into shapes and forms that would defy the traditional wood carpenter. For similar reasons, plastic is also an option, with the latest plastics being robust and infinitely variable as well as giving access to whole new palettes of colors to complement contemporary design in kitchen cabinets, sideboards and so on.

The classical wooden tabletop is now making way for materials such as toughened glass in contemporary kitchen tables. This is glass that resists heat, impacts and scratches and which is often fashioned into round or oval shapes for the top surface of the table. Size is not an issue when using this robust material. The kitchen table can be long or short, and yet equally sturdy.

Tired of conventional ideas about how kitchen tables should look? On the lookout for something to freshen up the place and to add some originality? Contemporary kitchen tables can also extend to bistro type tables, where the tabletop is relatively small and which therefore encourages a cozy atmosphere. This is an option that may particularly well suit kitchens that also have breakfast bars for serving food, as well as extensive workspaces, which means the conventional kitchen table is no longer such a necessity.

Remember that contemporary kitchen tables also need chairs, and preferably chairs that fit in with the contemporary style. Rest assured that with the possible exception of toughened glass, all the other materials are available for contemporary kitchen chairs. Indeed, designers often see tables and chairs need to be designed together, whether to bring out a common theme or an interesting contrast.

Bear in mind that even contemporary kitchen tables need also to be practically designed so that they are easy to use and to clean. For many models, this is the case, although because such tables are made to be seen as well as used, they will be that much more exposed to wear and tear, compared to conventional tables hidden under protective tablecloths.

Bakers Racks - The Extra Storage Space You've Been Looking to Add to Your Kitchen

In your kitchen, you just don't have the storage space that you need. So, things are jammed in this drawer and piled in that cupboard. Well, what if there was a furnishing you could invest in that could not only help you get your space organized, but add to the overall look of it too? Really, there is with one of them being bakers racks. One would be a fabulous investment.

Not quite sure what bakers racks are? Here is a quick crash course. Basically, they have a similar design to book shelves, but instead of the shelves being all the same size, the usually cascade from smaller ones at the top of the unit to bigger ones at the bottom. Some will also come with large flat table tops, ideal for given you a little extra work room if you need it. And, in addition to all the storage space the shelves provide, there are options that feature drawers and others that come with cabinets. So, not only can you nicely tuck away pots and pans, but you can store other things as well from cookbooks, to fine china, and any other kitchen gadgets that you might have.

Along with being practical, bakers racks also have a stunning look to them courtesy of the beautiful substances they can be crafted from and the multiple stylish ways their look can be finished with different accent and applied paints and stains. For example, you can purchase built out of stainless steel that has a rich hunter green stain applied to it while featuring a graceful scrolling design, beautifully complemented by an oak finished table top. Or, you can get another that has a more sleek appearance built from wrought iron with a powder coated black finish.

The possibilities don't just stop with the two bakers racks that were mentioned because there are many others as well that come in different styles too. Like, the first one talked about would be more of a traditional looking piece while the second is more on the modern side. Some of the other choices you can pick from include those that are antique, some that have an art deco feel, and even ones that are very country and cottage like in appearance.

Thinking that bakers racks are something that you want to look into? If so, an easy way to check out all the choices is by hitting the Internet for some online shopping. Kitchen Tables - They've Come a Long Way

Back in the early 20th century, many kitchens seemed to be of the same style and color: White tiles, white sinks, white floors and white kitchen cabinets. Kitchen tables came in a couple of styles, whether standard design, or drop leaf for the more compact kitchen. In the larger mansion houses, the kitchen table was of wood, without finish, varnish or wax. The cook would use the kitchen table as the one and only surface on which to prepare food. Turkeys would be dressed and stuffed on the kitchen table, and also pastry would be rolled out for many varieties of savory and sweet pies.

As times gradually changed, kitchen tables began to take on a new, more interesting look, and one that contained color and even glamour. A veneer was added to the table top, called Formica, and edging was made with chrome and other metals. Legs were also made of chrome and added a shine and a gleam to the whole kitchen area. Kitchen tables were also manufactured in different shapes and sizes. The old square, rectangular and round table was now being replaced by the oval shape, the crescent shape and other creative styles

Colors became more adventurous, and white gave way to blue, yellow, red, green and even patterns of squares or circles. The 50's and the 60's saw a boom in this type of kitchen furniture, and although the style changed over the years, this 50's style is now being called 'retro' and is much sought after. Imitation retro is available of course, but the more discerning among us are intent on getting an original item for that retro-look kitchen.

Kitchen designers were not slow to adjust to the trend and demand for this retro furniture, and new creations soon hit the market, based on the designs of old. Even the diners are getting in on the act, as more than one neighborhood can boast an original diner with vinyl seats, chrome edging and the all-important jukebox unit at each table.

In order to obtain an original retro kitchen table, one would have to keep tabs on all the thrift stores in your area. You would also need to visit the auction rooms and hope that something would become available. Sometimes, of course, the kitchen table may no longer be in peak condition, and would need some renovation to bring it back to a usable quality. But good pieces in great condition can be found if searched for.

But, the ideal retro kitchen table for most of us, may be the imitation items found in our modern furniture warehouses. There is nothing wrong with these items, and they do fit very well into our modern retro kitchen or dining area. New materials are used for the laminated tops, and chrome for the edging and legs may come from a different part of the world than the original back in the 50's. But, the quality is good, and the variety is probably better, due to the creative genius of the designers who are able to visualize a new retro kitchen, with modern designs and colors.

The retro look is not confined to kitchen tables, as crockery, cabinet doors and knobs, and kitchen utensils are also available. So, if you're looking for that great new, old look to your kitchen, go for the 'new' retro look, and be the admiration or your neighbors and friends.

Kitchen Stools - Everything You Need to Know About Them

When you are designing a kitchen you will want to carefully consider the kitchen stools you want to use. Bar stools can be used to create an interesting seating area in any room of the house, including in the kitchen. Bar stools are wonderful because when used around a pub table it can feel as though you are out and about without actually having to travel anywhere!

Even if you are not looking for a bar scene in your kitchen, you can find kitchen stools that suit every theme. These stools aren't just great to sit at, but they also look attractive and are something to talk about. Kitchen Stools are very important parts of kitchen design, which need very careful consideration.

Choosing a kitchen stools, however, isn't just as easy as choosing anything that takes your fancy. Actually, there are so many to choose from that it can be confusing. Make sure you purchase stools, which fit in with your décor and design and are also comfortable. Here are some tips that you should think about before choosing your kitchen stool:

- Style - You should make sure you choose a chair, which suits the style of your room; you don't want anything to look out of place. There are many different types of kitchen stools available, which means there is plenty of choice.
- Height - The seat needs to be comfortable, so make sure it is the right height for you to eat at. Not all tables and stools are the same height, which is why you should carefully consider and choose one to suit your needs exactly. You should ideally have around 10-13" between the bottom of the table and the top of the stool. Kitchen stools and tables can be brought together which is easier for most people, who don't want to do the calculations.
- How many - Think about how many people eat at your table and buy enough chairs so that everyone has a seat, you don't want to leave anyone out! You also need to consider the amount of space you have available, simply cramming dozens of seats together is never going to work. You need to make sure you know how many kitchen stools you will require to accommodate as many people as you will invite.
- Maintenance - Make sure you know exactly what you are letting yourself in for, how much maintenance is required on the stools that you are considering purchasing? Some stools don't require any maintenance, while others require careful care and attention.

Still not sure what to choose? Talk to a professional kitchen designer to get you off on the right foot. They may help you choose what will best suit the kitchen design you have in mind. You can also do a lot of comparison-shopping online. There are plenty of online furniture stores where you can browse design after design and narrow down the pieces that will create the kitchen of your dreams.

Kitchen Carts - Making Kitchen Life Easier

The ideal kitchen is a compromise between a completely functional space and a room that you can really live in. It is for this reason that kitchen furniture should be both designed and chosen. Because you may need to switch between working and socializing in your kitchen, the advantage of furniture like kitchen carts is to let you reconfigure the layout at any time.

Kitchen carts are similar to kitchen islands in that they allow you to use your kitchen space in an optimal way. However, unlike kitchen islands that are typically fixed and may well have power points and even faucets for running water, kitchen carts are mobile. They come in a variety of styles and sizes, which allow you to use them as a workspace or as a serving space and therefore also move them from the kitchen area to the dining room if required.

Wood is a popular material for making a kitchen cut. This allows for flexibility in the construction and a certain robustness coupled with lightness for easy moving. The structure of the kitchen counters will typically include different levels of shelves so that you can stall a microwave oven and other handy utensils underneath. The top surface of the cart is often more massive and maybe made out of solid wood to form a butcher's chopping block or heat resistant materials including ceramic tiles so that you can put hot dishes and casseroles on top.

At the bottom of the kitchen cart their will usually be small wheels or coasters, a little like a supermarket trolley, so that the cart can easily and safely be moved from one area to another. The up market models will allow you to lock the wheels into position so that you can park the cart in one place and use it as a stable item of kitchen furniture.

If you plan in advance or if you elect for a solution with integrated items of furniture, then you may also have the possibility of a kitchen cart that integrates perfectly into the rest of your kitchen furniture, either by coming along side existing countertop furniture, or by being stowed away into or under other fixed cabinets.

Check out the different options for your kitchen cart so that you can have the version that suits you best. If you want your kitchen guard to be entirely functional and an asset to you for working efficiently in your kitchen then you might go for a tall model which allows you to operate a microwave oven at the top level with shelf and cabinet space underneath. In this case you can get the advantage of the extra space while you are standing up preparing different dishes in your kitchen.

On the other hand if your kitchen cart is to be an elegant item in your dining room, then there are many sophisticated models available with handsome wood, granite or marble tops that are sure to fit in perfectly with your dining room furniture such as dining table, chairs and buffet.

Reasonably prices primary counters combined with a high value impact presentation counter can upgrade the kitchen, add style and finesse, as well as make a statement about the quality of the kitchen. Stone counters, even in small quantities can say a lot about the home. Perhaps your primary counters can coordinate with the island, offering a splash of color and design without killing the budget?

Space Required?

Still need additional space? Consider a closet nearby the kitchen and turn it into a pantry for storing supplies and equipment. Clearing the clutter from a small kitchen can expand the room and increase perceived value, even if a big remodel isn't possible.

Move breakfast supplies and equipment (toaster & coffee maker) to the breakfast nook, or even to the master bedroom, to make additional space in the kitchen. Offering a breakfast corner to the master suite may be just the ticket to make your home more livable. Consider all the options.

Dining Chairs - Pull Up a Seat and Enjoy a Good Meal

Dining chairs can go from the surprisingly cheap to the ridiculously expensive. Your only constraints may be your existing dining room furniture, your budget.... and perhaps your environmental conscience. Let me explain. Your dining chairs are an opportunity to choose furniture that is made from sustainable wood and with non-harmful products. Sustainable hardwoods like oak, cherry and maple make a good base, and even better when the production process excludes any chemicals that might vaporize overtime and pollute the air in your dining room.

Interestingly, if you have a dining room table that is not too outlandish, you'll probably find chairs to meet the criteria above and that still look good in your dining room. Sleek, contemporary designs using natural materials can go very well with glass top tables or tables made principally of metal. And of course, dining chairs can be both "green" and durable at the same time. No one says that you have to sit on chairs made out of cardboard or recycled soda pop bottles.

Naturally, if your budget extends to it, you can always partake in another form of recycling which is to buy antique chairs. Whether or not you choose to use them to seat your guests is another matter. It's true that purchasing those hand-built, eighteenth century master craftsman dining chairs makes you a little wary of using them for guests who might not appreciate their full value.

Another option is open to you as well. If your current set of dining chairs are looking a little worse for wear, then you can still get a little bit more useful life out of them by using seat covers. As seat covers can be relatively inexpensive, you can even treat yourself to "new" sets of chairs for every day of the week!

However, there comes a time when even the best recycling tips and tricks will no longer save a set of chairs whose time has come. It might be the right moment to overhaul the whole of your dining room furniture, from chairs to sideboard to table. Depending on what you have and what you want your dining room to look like, you may well find that a new ensemble of dining room furniture breathes a whole new life into the dining experience.

One of the basic choices that you will have to make in that case is whether to buy chairs with arms or without. It's a question of space, mobility and whether or not you and your guests at the dinner table would like to lounge around in your seats. Having arms on dining chairs also makes it easier to move the chairs around if you want to continue the conversation away from the table. On the other hand you would probably be well advised to acquire chairs for your dining room which do not require too much cleaning or maintenance, and that are protected against the stains that will inevitably result in area where food is commonplace.

Kitchen Tables - How to Choose the Right One

There are hundreds of different types of kitchen tables available; this can make it very difficult to choose the right one to fit in with your kitchen design.

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your house, especially if you have young children. And kitchen tables will be used for a number of different purposes, children will do their homework on them and you might meet your friends around the tables. Of course you will also dine at them!

If you have bothered to invest the time and money required to renovate your kitchen then you should also consider choosing kitchen furniture that looks the part and is very comfortable. Think about how many people you will need to fit around the table on a regular basis, and how much room do you have to fit a table in? If you have lots of room then you might want to consider the variety of kitchen tables that expand to cater to more people. A quick Internet search will find you plenty of these to look at.

There are loads of different designs of kitchen tables available, as well. Anything from granite tables, farmhouse tables and breakfast tables are being made. It's important to spend time choosing the right furniture so that it fits in with your design.

You need to create an area for seating in your kitchen, which can become an inviting place for people to gather and eat. Making sure that you can fit the kitchen table in is very important. Nobody would want to purchase a table that is too big or too small.

Farmhouse tables are very old fashioned and provide a great rugged look which suits large country homes. You could use chairs, which have cushions to make them more comfortable. These are suitable for use in Tuscan kitchen designs, French country designs, and rustic kitchen designs.

Another type of table is a bistro table; this is a much smaller table that normally has metal legs and a glass top. However some can also be found in wood, which is often less expensive.

Another option would be to include a breakfast nook in your kitchen; this is a smaller area, which has just enough room for your table. These areas are becoming more popular because they are cozy and very inviting and intimate, even in large kitchens. The design of this area can be done in such a way to make it even more special and welcoming. Kitchen tables are a vital part of any kitchen design; therefore it's important to make sure you know exactly what you are purchasing.

Many people like the material of granite to be used in their kitchens; this is particularly good if you use granite worktops in your kitchen. These are very durable and have a beautiful finish that can be used for many different purposes. Some of these tables even come with drawers, which is great additional storage space. Granite is popular because it can handle heat from saucepans and hot dishes.

Kitchen Chairs - a Must Have For Any Home

I once visited a furniture warehouse on the hunt for bargains to fill a number of rentals. One of the items on sale was the mismatched table and chairs set. These sets are ideal for basements, rentals, or even the cottage by the lake. But when furnishing a new or renovated kitchen, there's nothing better than getting a matching set, or at least a set of kitchen chairs that complement the table.

One of the best ways to get a great match is to use the contrast idea of styles. Like the black dinner suit with the white tie, it can look stunning if done correctly. Finding kitchen chairs to go with the table can be equally as fun-filled, and will be the admiration of your visitors.

If your kitchen houses a traditional pine table, then pine chairs go well. But there are alternatives. A tastefully painted chair set can really emphasize the colors of both table and chairs. Red pine chairs, done in a subdued color, would add great interest to a kitchen that has red in its color scheme. In addition, a quality barstool could add some great style to your cooking and/or dining area, especially if you have a breakfast bar that is used by family and guests alike.

Maybe you have an original hardwood table in your kitchen, and are looking for something that will complement its style. Take a photograph of your table along to the furniture store, and I think you'll be surprised at how many choices you actually have. Hardwood tables, of course, come in a variety of tones and colors. Maybe you have a dark wood, like oak or teak, or maybe a very plush finish like cherry. Finding the right match for these items can be fun, and will brighten up the kitchen area very effectively.

Depending on your table, there is the alternative of the retro 50's kitchen chairs, which will add interest to any kitchen. As these chairs come in many different styles and colors, there is a lot to choose from. There are also different textures and fabrics to be bought, all of which will create a kitchen that is unique in style and presentation.

If you're having trouble deciding what it is you need, visit your local furniture store and ask to speak to someone who may specialize in the look you want. They may be able to offer some advice and supply samples of contrasting sets. There is no end to the possibilities that can be found to suit your needs and wants. Shop around and visit several stores until you find the help you need and the particular match you're looking for.

At the end of day, it's what you want and envision for your kitchen that counts. The kitchen chairs that you feel are appropriate for your environment will be the ones that fit for you. If you want your kitchen to make a statement about your personality, then by all means pick colors, styles and textures that match up. Be adventurous, and have some fun.

Glass Subway Tiles For Your Kitchen

When you talk about renovating or remodeling one area of or the entire house, the term glass subway tile is often mentioned. This is because the popularity of glass tiles has increased throughout the years. It has become a favorite of interior designers in creating innovative design styles for the home. If you want to find out more about them, specifically how to use them to create a fresh look for your kitchen, then this is the article for you.

Many people wonder if glass subway tiles can really be used for decorating purposes, considering they're breakable and seemingly unsuitable to be played around with. The kitchen is one of the very few places in this world where you can be yourself. In it, you can cook up a storm, dish out secrets with friends, hang out with the family, or enjoy solitude while whipping out a meal or reading the paper. This means that, first and foremost, your bathroom should look like the way you want it to. Your bathroom should be an expression of who you really are; it should be a celebration of your tastes and preferences. If you want to put glass subway tiles in your kitchen, you can do so without fear of it not being possible. Many people use glass tiles in their kitchens - and you can, too.

You can find several websites that offer glass subway tiles. There are different designs for you to choose from, the most common of which are the stained glass and mosaic designs. You can opt for either design in a glass subway tile, as long as you consider not only your taste but also your kitchen's needs. The stained glass design embraces an appearance that possesses bright, colorful streaks and swirls. It is of an opalescent nature and can be customized with every use. On the other hand, the mosaic design is rich in texture and color. It is of a transparent, semi-opaque nature; it is smooth in the front and rightly textured in the back to provide you with a more secure grip, with miter beveled edges for that e3asy angling on corners.

There are so many things you can do with glass subway tiles for your kitchen. You can use them as lovely, unique accents or backsplash in the counter area, breakfast table area, or any kitchen nook. You can even extend the design out into the hall, perhaps even into the bathroom or outside in the pool area. The only thing that can limit the possibilities of using glass subway tiles is your imagination.

Kitchen Color Schemes - Facts and Fiction

For time immemorial, colors have been the universal language to communicate all matters of the heart and soul. Whether fiery red, iridescent blue or gorgeous green, their individual identities are subsumed under one venerable, awe-inspiring term, 'colors'. Since they have more than just a token import on our moods and emotions, their hallowed presence is really not astonishing.

These dazzling and delightful shades have managed to extend their footprints to different parts of our homes, including the kitchen. Little wonder then that kitchen color schemes have managed to acquire frontline status in our collective decorating consciousness.

Color Schemes- Your Greatest Quandary?

Even though these hues fire our imagination, there's no denying the fact that choosing shades that exude warmth and effervescence can be quite an uphill climb. Here are a few tips that are sure to rescue your feckless attempts from limbo:

  • A few coats of cool, crisp and light colors will the much-desired shot in the arm for small spaces. Dark colors, on the other hand, are a strict no-no, as they make the space appear smaller.
  • The impact of natural light on colors must be considered earnestly. Try to bring artificial light sources and colors together, and it's a dead cocktail you are sipping.
  • A kitchen that faces north is sure to sizzle with cool tones, while a south facing space soaked in warm tones leave you gasping for breath.
  • The kitchen wall and cabinets do not have to the Cane and Able of the kitchen's décor. A uniform color palette that creates harmony between these two elements is sure to cause a sensation.
  • If you are keen to experiment just a wee bit, try painting the walls in a shade that's bolder than the one on the cabinets. Something like off-white and pale-yellow will leave onlookers completely transfixed.
  • Striking contrasts with the help of bold colors create drama and intrigue with a seductively intense passion.
  • Allow the bold colors to transmit some of the magic to the chairs and tables, and watch the stoic calm in the kitchen become past tense instantly.
  • The electrifying combination of richly colored hand-painted tiles and plain tiles is a marriage made in design heaven.
  • Bright colors like yellow and orange put the zing back into your lackluster culinary experience.

So if you feel your kitchen is floundering for breath, it's time for you to play with colors that have a persistent place in your imagination.

Replace a Kitchen Countertop

A new kitchen countertop can add to the look and feel of your kitchen and improve its functionality. The material choices for your new countertop differ in aesthetic appeal, maintenance required, resilience, and applicability. There is something for every homeowners taste and budget.

Comparison of Materials

To select the most suitable material for your new kitchen countertop, it is advisable to have an idea of each of their properties so that you can make an informed purchase.

Laminate: Laminates are made of slender sheets of plastic of varying thickness. Formica is a commonly used laminate. Laminates can replicate the look of other materials, such as granite. It is an inexpensive material, available in a large variety of colors, patterns, and surfaces, the edges can be square or rolled, and the material is resistant to staining and easy to clean.Laminates have some disadvantages as well. Their finish can get spoiled due to heat; so hot pots and utensils should not be placed on a laminated surface. Cleaning liquids with strong chemicals too can damage the surface. A laminate is not useful as a cutting surface as it scratches easily; therefore, it is advisable to mount a chopping board. Once damaged, a laminate can not be repaired, but must be replaced. Flat edges of a laminated surface tend to chip. Laminates do not present a seamless appearance, particularly the lighter shades. This is because the backing is dark in color. Scratches and abrasions will show on a high gloss surface, but not on a patterned laminate.

Tile: Tiles are a relatively inexpensive way to add color and character to your kitchen. They are available in a variety of sizes ranging from 1 to 18 square inches.. Tiles are primarily made of glazed ceramics; the glazing renders tiles resistant to dampness, soiling, and scuffing. Tiles give you the freedom to design your kitchen countertop in the most creative of ways. They can be arranged vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. Tiles offer a range of texture and pattern options. However, the grout used between the tiles soils easily, is susceptible to mildew attack, and requires frequent cleaning. Tiles are not very resistant to impact and often chip easily, they are slightly more expensive than laminate, the use of epoxy grout, which has the benefit of being more resistant to soiling can add to the cost.

Corian: Corian is a brand name for a solid surface kitchen countertop material. It has been available for the past 30 years. Unlike laminates, a solid surface comprises a single block of plastic. Solid surfaces are durable, available in a range of colors, matte and gloss finish, the seams are not prominent, and therefore they present a uniform look. Solid surfaces can mimic the look and feel of stone. They resist staining, are non-porous, and can be cleaned easily with mild soap. Damaged surfaces can be repaired with the help of repair kits that are readily available. Most brands offer transferable warranties. The major disadvantage of opting for solid surfacing is its price. The installation has to be executed by a certified installer. In addition, the surface can be damaged by heat and can be scratched under certain circumstances.

Granite: Granite is the most widely used stone for countertops. Its feel and character are imitated by several synthetic alternatives but never quite equaled. Granite is extremely durable, scratchproof, and heat resistant. Therefore, it eliminates the need for installing trivets or a chopping board. It offers a wide selection of natural colors in polished and matte finishes. It can be cleaned with soap and water, a special cleaner for removing stains is recommended.

Granite has a few disadvantages as well. It is expensive, heavy and requires professional installation. It requires periodic sealing to avoid staining and has visible seams. Granite tiles are an inexpensive option to installing a slab; however, the grouts require regular cleaning in order to maintain sanitation.

Other options in stone worktops include limestone and marble. Limestone offers limited color choice but has high heat and impact resistance. Marble provides a nonstick surface; it can be used for baking too. However marble is porous and discolors easily.

Quartz: Quartz is a beautiful natural material that is tough and durable as well. Silestone and Cambria are quartz countertop surfaces. Quartz offers several advantages when compared to other countertop materials. It provides greater scratch and scorch resistance as compared to plastic surfaces. It also does not require resealing and provides better stain resistance than granite. Quartz is available in a range of colors and offers many edge design options. Since, quartz is an engineered product the colors are more uniform than natural surfaces such as granite. It is also an approved surface for food preparation by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) in the United Sates. Quartz countertops have seams but these are slender and when installed properly are hardly noticeable. Most of the manufacturers provide a 10-year warranty for the material.

Wood and Butcher Block: Wood is another natural surface that is favored for the character it can add to your kitchen. Wood is an ideal cutting surface, as it does not blunt the knife-edge. A wood countertop is prepared by gluing together strips of rock maple or beech wood. Wood is easy to care for and lasts long. However, designs and edge details for a butcher block should not be too intricate as they are difficult to clean. A thorough scrubbing is required after using the butcher block for raw meat. Periodic sanding and oiling help to remove the scratches that appear over time. Wood also requires regular sealing treatment.

How long does it take to install a countertop?

The time taken to install a countertop will vary with the material. Heavier materials, such as granite and quartz will take more time for a proper installation. A pre-formed laminate kitchen counter can be installed in approximately 2-3 hours. With most installations, there are always some adjustments to be made since on many occasions' factors such as, the walls not being plumb or the cabinet surface not being level come into play. If the countertop is fabricated onsite the process may take 2 days or more, as the sealing and finishing take time to set.

efficient.

2. After getting an appropriate tile for you kitchen backsplash, you need to mark the center of that area. Then, make a horizontal line using an instrument called leveler or laser level across the area you are going to tile. You can also make a horizontal line using a chalk line and after making a line you should recheck it whether it is even or not.

3. After making the line, start laying them from middle in one column and one row. In case you face any problem in placing the tiles, you can fix the cut out tile pieces in the corners.

4. Remove the decoration pieces and cover your counter tops with a protective covering before starting the work. Also make sure to turn off the appliances which are placed around the work area.

5. Start applying a thin layer of cement mortar from the center point using a trowel. The mortar should not be used in excess. It's always better to apply mortar for 4-6 tiles only because if you spread more of the mortar, it may get dry. In order to fix the tiles on the wall, do it with a twisting motion.

6. After completing a row of tiles, check the row using level in order to make sure that the tiles are even and haven't moved.

7. If there is any need to cut the tile pieces, you can use a tile saw. It is easily available on rent at any of the local hardware stores. Be careful while working with saw.

8. When the mortar gets completely dried, apply the grout. This will make the surface uniform and fill the gaps. After applying the grout, wait for sometime. As soon as the grout dries up, wipe the tiles using a window cleaner.

White Kitchen Cabinets and Kitchen Design

Today the most popular type of home improvement homeowners are wanting and doing is kitchen remodeling. Kitchens are the main attraction and social center of your home for preparing meals for your family and for friends a comfortable place to socialize and gather. Kitchen design and planning is most important step for you to achieve the personal look, practical use and customized to meet you and your family's lifestyle and needs. One of the most popular colors kitchen designers choose is white.

White kitchen cabinets can be used to make a subtle design statement or portray a very dramatic distinctive look. The color white speaks for itself and depending on the style of kitchen cabinetry and door style you can create a look that fits your personality. White kitchen cabinets are used for many different decor such as contemporary, traditional, country, French country, English, shaker and many more. There are also many choices of material used for kitchen cabinets like; plastic laminate, white painted wood, high gloss lacquer, vinyl foil, white stain and white washed finish - all having their our design statement. Each of these styles has a distinctive look and can reflect your own personality.

White kitchen cabinets make color choices for accessories and countertops somewhat easier to choose an accent color theme throughout the kitchen and surrounding rooms. Using white color cabinetry in any of the styles mentioned can accomplish a design which is timeless and stay stylish for years to come. Contemporary style white gloss finishes give a very sleek modern look, while white painted wood raised panel door styles can give a warm traditional feeling in a kitchen. The flooring and countertop colors are the main accent areas and can drastically give different moods with different colors. A white traditional style cabinet with wood flooring is very popular and makes the kitchen feel very inviting and warm. Adding granite countertops to this combination again can totally change the mood of the kitchen depending on the color and texture.

The color choice for appliances is also very important and contributes to the total design statement. I would suggest if you are planning a traditional style kitchen use matching white wood front decorator panels on the dishwasher and refrigerator fronts as they will blend in better with the total look and use your choice for ovens, cook tops and sinks as stainless steel or black. In a contemporary style kitchen many designers choose to accent all appliances with contrasting colors to create a more dramatic look.

In the past many people felt that white kitchen cabinets were only for showrooms and thought white was too much work to maintain. With today's new wood finishes and synthetic materials white kitchen cabinetry is as easy to maintain as any other stained color. White kitchen cabinets have been in style for the past 20 years and show no signs of going out of the style trends to date. It is much easier to change color themes from time to time by changing window treatments, place mats and countertop accessories with new accent colors if you choose.

If you want color, interest, and functionality a glass block kitchen bar can be used in conjunction with a granite countertop. These bars are generally built 40" high and the counter is set on top of the glass blocks. The bar can be built in either a rounded, angular, or rectangular design (there are radius blocks, angled blocks, and corner blocks to accomplish this objective). If you really want the glass to stand out consider either backlighting the bar wall or using either vibrant or muted colored glass blocks (a project in Minneapolis Minnesota is planning this type of project right now).

Idea 2 - Half Wall Room Separator - In many split level homes like you see in the Midwestern United States there is a railing at the end of the kitchen to safely separate the kitchen from the family room that is 5 to 6 steps below. A project in Cleveland Ohio recently used a glass block separator wall to safely modernize this railing area. The wall was built 32" high by 10 feet long and used finished end and double ended blocks. It was safely tied in with anchors at the side wall (jamb) with panel reinforcing throughout the mortar joints - creating a modernized, safe, and stylish wall in a highly visible area of the home.

Idea 3 - Operable Casement Kitchen Window - If you need privacy, air flow, and a unique style all in one kitchen window consider an operable acrylic block window. A home in Columbus Ohio was built in a subdivision where the homes are only 12 feet apart and the kitchen window is on the side facing the neighbor's windows (not the best situation when you've been laboring around the house and you don't look your best). Using an operable casement acrylic block window the owner can now get air through the window and the privacy they desire. The vinyl framed block window also meets the Energy Star ratings required for this development as well.

Idea 4 - Block Up A Hard To Clean Area Behind the Stove -Have you ever used wall paper behind a stove only to find it splattered and stained from your meals overheating from your cook top? A solution to add style and ease the cleaning of these hard to get to areas is with glass tiles or glass blocks. A project near Boston Massachusetts built a colored block wall behind a pot bellied stove to contrast the old stove with the new contemporary styled block. This wall also had the benefit of transferring light through this interior wall to an adjoining bathroom as well.

Idea 5 - Kitchen backsplashes - The backsplash underneath your kitchen cabinets does not have to be boring anymore. If you'd like to move light in from the outside and add style with an easy to clean material consider using a vinyl framed glass block window system either 8" or 16" finished height in your backsplash. The blocks can be provided in clear glass, colored glass or even decorative patterned blocks (there are contemporary designed blocks, fruit patterns, and over 150 other standard and limitless custom blocks as well). In many cases the blocks can add light and reduce the cost versus using decorative glass tiles in a backsplash.

This is a just a short list of the ways glass blocks can add style, interest, and practical benefits to your next kitchen bar, window, wall, or backsplash project.

Kitchen Renovations at a Reasonable Cost

Often, homeowners would like to remodel their kitchen and other rooms in their home but lack the financial resources for such a major project. There are quite a few ways to change the look of the kitchen, the busiest room in the house, with some attractive remodeling plans. Just taking a close look at what you would like to see in a new kitchen, along with what must to be done to improve it, can help your prioritize and get your renovation started.

The clear first step as you begin to renovate is figuring out how much money you want to spend. Then break your list down into the areas that require your attention. Even if the entire project cannot be completed at once, you can take on small projects to help you stick to your budget. There is no "right" timeline. Kitchen remodeling can be done gradually as time and money permits, but fix what must done first before it turns into a major disaster. Keeping to your priorities can help keep the project from getting out of hand. If the drain pipe is leaking water under the sink, a coat of paint on the walls will not help. Start with the essentials.

A Little Paint Can Go a Long Way

Entirely new cabinetry may not be possible depending on your existing budget for kitchen renovations, but the doors are easy to unscrew. You can sand them down and apply a fresh coat of paint or stain. Take my advice, this can make old cabinets look like new. However, you must not forget to take care of the strip of wood in between the cabinet doors. Left untreated, this will stand out like a sore thumb. While you have the cabinet covers off, you might as well replace the hardware with something modern and new.

Fresh paint goes a long way towards making a kitchen attractive. The best way to paint is to take everything off the walls, remove all nails and screws and patch the holes with spackle. Kitchen remodeling can look great no matter what as long as the job is done thoroughly. Once the spackle dries, sand the area down. Take several looks around the room to be sure no holes were missed and the wall is ready for paint. Any imperfect areas will likely show through the new paint, which will ruin all the hard work you spent trying to make your kitchen look nice.

Taking the time to plan ahead is an important part of any renovating project. Even if the project is not planned to begin for many weeks or months, you can start to put your dream together if you see the cabinets you want at a clearance sale. Buy them and keep them until you are ready to start.

Sources For Great Kitchen Decor Ideas

Everyone thinks about upgrading their kitchen occasionally and may look for kitchen décor ideas. Without the need to take on a complete DIY renovation, a few simple improvements like paint and some new accessories can add just enough personality to any mundane kitchen. No one is limited to their own imagination which is a relief for those struggling with finding décor ideas. Many kitchen décor ideas come more easily if the right sources are used.

The internet is a terrific place to start gathering kitchen décor ideas. Many remodeling sites have pictures showing décor themes and decorating ideas hand-selected by professional interior designers. Finding a kitchen with the same basic layout as yours can really help when you need décor suggestions unique to your layout. Oftentimes, it is simply a matter of finding coordinated accessories to make the kitchen look like it was originally planned that way.

Magazines about home remodeling can also be a great source of kitchen décor ideas as they regularly include pictures of newly constructed or remodeled kitchens. Or, you can get ideas by visiting home improvement stores and deal with the salesmen who can offer some guidance and suggestions. Or, spend an afternoon at a home fair where you can pick up some brochures and pamphlets that may offer some décor ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

A person may enjoy a variety of kitchen accessories but, unfortunately, does not have a kitchen large enough or a kitchen with limited counter space to be able to add the accessories to the room. In these cases, small wall hangings may be the only option but adding in matching dish towels and rugs can provide a little extra touch without cluttering the kitchen space.

Even those who do not use their kitchen often can find a few kitchen décor ideas as a refreshing change to their home. A couple new wall hangings or kitchen island decoration can make a big difference, but it is all based upon that person's personal tastes and preferences. Some may simply choose to limit the extent of kitchen decorating.

Another way to get some good kitchen décor ideas is asking family and friends for their opinion, but be sure they will provide you with only straightforward, honest opinions. It can be risky asking sales people for opinions since they will often tell you exactly what you want to hear in order to sell you the products in question. In the end, you are the best judge of what will enhance your kitchen to meet your needs in by style and function as you use the kitchen and live in the home. However, there is nothing wrong with seeking a few ideas from other sources to help you decide a décor direction to follow.

Formica Countertop Vs Granite Countertop

Can I compare a formica countertop with a granite countertop? These are the questions I always get asked. Well, can you compare wood with stone? No you can't! Same goes for countertops. A formica countertop is made up of chipboard as the core of the countertop and laminated with formica on the surface of the chipboard. The formica material it self also comes in a roll and can be used to stick above the countertop below the wall unit as a back splash. You can also make up your own laminated kitchen countertop by cutting a piece of chipboard, preferably 32mm thick, the shape you want and then sticking the formica onto the chipboard. One of the best glues to use would be either Contact glue or my favorite Gemkem. A formica countertop isn't as durable as a granite countertop but it is durable. If you take care of your countertop you will get allot of mileage out of it.

How do you take care your counter tops?Unlike granite where you can cut on and place hot pots on, you can not do the same with formica counter tops. Although a formica countertop is scratch and heat resistant it isn't scratch and heat proof. This means you can not cut on a formica countertop or place a hot pot on it but you can drag a pot across the counter without scratching it as well as place cooler temperature pots and pans on it without burning a hole in the formica. So if you're asking whether a granite countertop is tougher than a formica countertop you have your answer but remember, granite cost's about 5 times more than formica. And that's the cheaper granite I'm talking about. Plus you can cut the countertop to size yourself you don't need special machines and templates like you'd need with granite. This makes the formica countertop installation process allot easier.

Installing a formica countertop is very easy. So easy that fitters sometimes rush the job and make mistakes. Don't make this mistake. "Measure twice cut once" is your number one rule when fitting a countertop, specialy when doing intricate measurements like your cut-outs for your sink and hob. Remember, it's much easier to prevent a mistake than to fix one...that's if it can be fixed. Formica counter tops also aren't waterproof so when you've finished your sink and hob's cut out seal the inside of the cut outs with marine silicone. The kind you use to build fishtanks with. This will prevent water form drawing into the chipboard and we all know what happens when water touches chipboard. Let's just say "it's like mixing water with Weatbix".

A formica countertop is also easier to handle and lighter to work with. If you've ever carried a slab of granite up three flights of stairs you will know what I'm talking about.

Make a Small Kitchen Feel Larger

Many people are turned off by a small kitchen. They simply do not see the beauty in it. With a remodel, though, a small kitchen can get a peerless look. It can seem larger and more open then before. All it takes is a little work and redesigning. So, you don't have to be stuck with that small kitchen. You do not have to keep tripping over each other when there is more than one person in the room. You also no longer have to worry about where you will store things. Your makeover will give you the room and the layout that will turn it into your dream kitchen.

Layout and Design

The whole remodel starts with analyzing the layout and design of the room. For a makeover project that will make the room seem larger there are three basic designs to consider. There is the 'U', the 'L' and the straight valley. The design features should include some basic rules. The refrigerator needs to be near the cooking area, but close to the stove area. There needs to be enough counter space to allow for food preparation and somewhere to set food once it is done cooking. Another consideration is that the utensils need to have an area where they can be kept near the food preparation area. Cookware should be close to the stove. The overall design needs to have some type of flow to it that will allow for a person to easily move about the kitchen, doing typical kitchen chores like cooking and clean up.

Additional Ideas

There are sometimes additional things that can be done to help open up the room. If the counter is against an inside wall then it may be possible to cut out part of the wall to create a bar area which will really open up the area. Doors or doorways can be changed to give the room a more open feel, too. A contractor can probably provide several ideas and his own opinion on how to open up the area and make it feel larger.

How the New Design Will Help

When you have a small area it is easy to feel crowded. If things are not organized and orderly then you will feel as if you are crammed in the space when trying to get things done. If someone else is in the room it can add to the hassle of trying to maneuver around and get things done.
